Chaetodon flavirostris

Not Reef Safe

The Black Butterflyfish (Chaetodon flavirostris), also known as the Dusky Butterfly, is a striking species native to the reefs of the Coral Sea off Australia's coast. It features a dusky gray-to-black body framed with golden-orange edging and a distinct orange stripe running across its face. This species adds a dramatic flair to fish-only marine setups and is best housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons with plenty of swimming space and live rock for natural foraging behavior.

Though peaceful and compatible with similarly tempered tank mates, the Black Butterflyfish is not suited for reef environments, as it may nip at coral polyps and ornamental invertebrates. It does best in FOWLR (Fish-Only With Live Rock) systems where it can explore and graze comfortably.

In the wild, this butterflyfish grazes on mollusks, small crustaceans, and algae. In captivity, a balanced diet of mysis shrimp, krill, and marine-based seaweed like Nori will keep it healthy and vibrant. Feed a variety of frozen and prepared foods to support immunity and maintain its vivid coloration.

A calm and hardy choice for advanced aquarists, the Black Butterflyfish thrives in stable environments and can reach up to 8 inches in length. With proper care, this species can live for many years and make a beautiful centerpiece in a peaceful saltwater aquarium.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
