Gymnothorax saxicola
Reef Safe With Caution
The Black Edge Moray Eel (Gymnothorax ocellatus) is a captivating predator native to the Caribbean. Reaching impressive lengths up to 24 inches, it displays a dark brown body adorned with vibrant golden spots, a gleaming gold underside, and a distinctive black-edged tail that gives the species its name. With a thick, muscular build, it typically shelters in rocky crevices, exposing only its head and open mouth, a typical behavior among moray eels. Over time, it may become more visible, occasionally resting in the open. This eel requires a spacious, tightly sealed aquarium of at least 120 gallons, equipped with ample hiding spaces to feel secure. Known for its aggressive feeding habits, it will consume nearly anything it can overpower, including tankmates. Its carnivorous diet includes live feeder fish, squid, and octopus, making it best suited for predator-specific or species-only aquariums.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
