Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis

Not Reef Safe

The Blue Line Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis), commonly referred to as the Bluebanded Angelfish, is a visually striking marine species known for its bold patterns and graceful silhouette. Juveniles are instantly recognizable by their deep black bodies highlighted with shimmering blue stripes and a vibrant yellow band positioned behind the eyes. Accents of bright white line the dorsal and anal fins, while the tail glows a vivid yellow. As they mature, their coloration shifts dramatically to a soft yellow-tan base, overlaid with vivid horizontal blue lines.

This angelfish tends to be reserved when first introduced but quickly becomes comfortable in stable, low-stress environments. A large, mature aquarium, ideally 180 gallons or more, equipped with live rock and peaceful tank mates helps this species settle in and thrive. While beautiful, it should be housed with caution in reef systems, as it may occasionally graze on coral polyps, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. It will also pick at various algae types, including diatoms and filamentous varieties.

Feeding the Blueline Angelfish a nutrient-rich, diverse diet is key to its health. A mix of finely chopped seafoods like mysis shrimp, high-quality pellets, clams, marine algae, and sponge-based preparations will ensure optimal nutrition. Thanks to advancements in aquaculture, captive-bred specimens are more resilient and environmentally friendly, making them a compelling choice for conscientious marine aquarists.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
