Pomacanthus chrysurus
Not Reef Safe
The Chrysurus Angelfish (Pomacanthus chrysurus), also known as the Goldtail or Ear Spot Angelfish, is a rare and striking addition to the marine aquarium world, largely due to its limited availability in the trade. Its body features a rich, mottled brown coloration marked by bold vertical white bands, while its head is adorned with vibrant sapphire-blue streaks. The tail, which begins as translucent in juveniles, gradually shifts to a muted yellow rimmed with electric blue as the fish matures.
This species demands a spacious, well-established environment—an aquarium of at least 220 gallons—with plenty of live rock for natural grazing and numerous hiding spots to help reduce stress. Though visually captivating, the Chrysurus is not ideal for reef setups, as it may nip at soft and stony corals, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. However, it may coexist with certain small-polyped or mildly noxious coral species. When alarmed or agitated, this angelfish is known to emit a distinctive clicking sound, adding to its uniqueness.
Like most angelfish, the Chrysurus is hermaphroditic, and its gender cannot be determined visually. Breeding in captivity is extremely rare. A nutritious and varied diet is essential for its well-being, including Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish blends rich in sponge, frozen mysis or shrimp, and other meaty marine foods. With proper care and the right environment, this elusive angelfish becomes a rare centerpiece for the dedicated marine aquarist.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
