Bodianus mesothorax
Not Reef Safe
The Coral Hogfish (Bodianus mesothorax), also called the Eclipse Hogfish, is a bold and vibrant species ideal for fish-only saltwater aquariums. Juveniles start off a striking burgundy color adorned with bright yellow spots, but as they mature (typically around 2–2.5 inches), they undergo a rapid transformation into their adult coloration marked by a purplish head, a yellow to whitish rear, and a dramatic diagonal black stripe across the midsection.
Growing up to 10 inches long, the Coral Hogfish should be housed in a tank of at least 70 gallons. While hardy and active, this fish is not reef safe, as it will opportunistically snack on shrimp, snails, worms, mussels, and other invertebrates. It also tends to bully smaller, more passive tank mates, so it's best kept with other semi-aggressive or larger fish in a well-structured aquascape with hiding spots.
This species has also been noted for its cleaning behavior, picking parasites off tank mates, especially when young. Its diet should consist of meaty marine foods such as squid, shrimp, mysis, and marine pellets. With its color-shifting charm and dynamic personality, the Coral Hogfish adds both utility and excitement to the right saltwater setup.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
