Symphorichthys spilurus
Not Reef Safe
The Sailfin Snapper (Symphorichthys spilurus), also known as the Blue-Lined Sea Bream, is a stunning Indo-Pacific species known for its elegant fins and vibrant coloration. With flowing dorsal extensions and bold, undulating blue lines over a golden-yellow body, this snapper makes a striking impression at both juvenile and adult stages. Distinctive markings include an orange stripe through the eye and a black spot near the tail.
This species can grow up to 24 inches in length and requires a large, well-aquascaped aquarium of at least 150 to 200 gallons. Best kept singly as an adult, Sailfin Snappers may be housed together as juveniles if introduced at the same time. While generally peaceful, their high-profile fins may make them targets for nipping by more aggressive species, so tank mates should be chosen with care.
Though not safe for reef aquariums, the Sailfin Snapper thrives in fish-only systems. It will prey on shrimp, snails, worms, and other small invertebrates, making it unsuitable for mixed reef environments. Their diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as chopped seafood and frozen carnivore preparations. Due to their active swimming behavior and large size, regular, generous feedings are essential to support their health and energy levels.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
Due to variations within species, your item may not look identical to the image.
Measurements are measured from the tip of the head to end of the tail.
