Orange Symphyllia
Orange Symphyllia
Species: Symphyllia
Approximate Size: 12"
Colors: Orange
Overview
Symphyllia coral, often referred to as "brain coral," belongs to the genus Symphyllia. This coral is well-known for its unique, intricate structure and vibrant colors, making it a popular choice in marine aquariums and an important component of coral reef ecosystems.
Morphology
- Structure: Symphyllia corals typically exhibit a massive, lobed, or brain-like appearance. The colonies can grow large and often feature deep grooves and ridges that enhance their textured look.
- Corallites: The corallites of Symphyllia are shallow and tightly packed, giving the surface a distinct, convoluted appearance. When the polyps are extended, they can display long, flowing tentacles, especially during the night.
- Coloration: These corals come in a variety of vibrant colors, including shades of green, brown, blue, and purple. The colors are influenced by the presence of zooxanthellae, the symbiotic algae that provide energy through photosynthesis.
Habitat
- Distribution: Symphyllia corals are typically found in shallow, tropical waters across the Indo-Pacific region. They often inhabit reef slopes and lagoons, where they can benefit from good light and moderate water flow.
- Environment: They thrive in areas with moderate to bright light and prefer gentle to moderate water movement, which helps in nutrient distribution and reduces sediment accumulation.
Biology
- Feeding: Symphyllia corals are mixotrophic, relying on their zooxanthellae for energy as well as capturing plankton and organic particles from the water. The coral polyps extend their tentacles to feed, primarily during the night.
Care in Aquariums
- Light Requirements: Moderate lighting is ideal for Symphyllia coral. While they benefit from adequate light for photosynthesis, excessive direct light can cause stress and bleaching.
- Water Flow: A gentle to moderate water flow is recommended to help with nutrient distribution and to prevent debris from settling on the coral.
-
Water Parameters: Optimal conditions include:
- Temperature: 77-79°F
- Salinity: 1.025-1.026 specific gravity
- pH: 8.1-8.4 Regular monitoring of water quality is essential for their health.
Behavior and Aggression
-
Aggressiveness: Symphyllia corals can exhibit territorial behavior and have potent potent stings that could hurt neighboring corals. It’s essential to provide adequate space around them to minimize aggression.
-
Compatibility: They can coexist with various tank mates, including other LPS corals, but should be monitored for interactions, especially with more aggressive species. Avoid placing them too close to corals that might harm them.
These corals are for saltwater aquariums only.
This is the exact specimen you will receive, however, due to differences in tank lighting and screen settings, this item may look slightly different in your aquarium.
