Pseudanthias pictilis

Reef Safe

The Pictilis Anthias (Pseudanthias pictilis), also known as the Painted Goldie, is a larger, striking species of anthias recognized for its pinkish-blue body, bold blue oval on the tail, and vivid orange-red coloration along the rear third of its body. Native to deeper reef slopes of the Western Pacific, this fish thrives in lower light conditions and appreciates aquariums with ample rockwork, caves, and hiding spots that mimic its natural environment.

Highly social and hermaphroditic, Pictilis Anthias are best kept in harems—typically one male to several females—as housing multiple males may lead to aggression. If no male is present, the dominant female will naturally transition into a male. They can grow up to 6 inches and require a spacious aquarium: a single specimen may do well in a 125-gallon tank, but groups do best in 180 gallons or larger.

With a fast metabolism and constant activity level, these anthias require frequent feedings throughout the day. They accept a wide variety of foods, including frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellet or flake foods. Automated feeders are ideal for maintaining a consistent feeding schedule. With the right care, a harem of Pictilis Anthias will add dazzling motion, vibrant color, and natural schooling behavior to any reef-safe aquarium.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
