Plectorhinchus lineatus

Not Reef Safe

The Striped Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus lineatus), also referred to as the Silver-banded Sweetlips, is a visually stunning fish with a silver body marked by four dark brown horizontal stripes. Its fins and dorsal ridge display a soft yellow hue, while large dark spots accent the fins for added contrast. Like many members of the grunt family, this fish exhibits a noticeable transformation in appearance from juvenile to adult.

Due to its potential adult size of nearly two feet and its active swimming behavior, a large aquarium of at least 300 gallons. The tank should provide open swimming space, stable rockwork, and plenty of hiding spots to help the fish feel secure. Striped Sweetlips are not ideal for reef tanks, as they will prey on smaller crustaceans, worms, snails, serpent stars, and other invertebrates.

Part of the Plectorhinchinae subfamily, Sweetlips are considered more visually appealing than their Grunt relatives but are often more sensitive in captivity. They can be slow to start feeding and may require live foods such as mysis shrimp or small live freshwater shrimp to encourage their appetite during acclimation. Over time, they will accept a variety of meaty marine foods. With proper care and diet, the Striped Sweetlips can become a long-lived and captivating addition to large, fish-only marine systems.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
