Canthigaster margaritata

Not Reef Safe

The Pearl Toby Pufferfish (Canthigaster margaritata), often called the Spotted Sharp-nosed Puffer, is a small but charismatic species known for its curious personality and distinctive appearance. It sports a rounded brown body covered in shimmering blue speckles, with spiral patterns above its eyes and electric-blue lines near the dorsal fin. Its slender, elongated snout gives it a unique profile, adding to its sharp-nosed nickname.

Reaching up to 5 inches in size, this pufferfish requires an aquarium of at least 50 gallons. It enjoys exploring rocky caves and crevices, so live rock with plenty of hiding spaces is essential. While fascinating to watch and often described as interactive with their keepers, Pearl Tobies are not considered reef safe. They’re known to nip at corals, inverts, and even smaller or more passive fish.

A strong carnivorous appetite means they should be fed two to three times a day with a diet that includes Mysis shrimp, krill, silversides, clams, and chopped crustaceans. They also enjoy algae clips with Nori for enrichment. Their tough beak-like teeth are designed to crush prey, so a varied, meaty diet is crucial for both nutrition and dental health. Due to their messy eating habits, excellent filtration is a must. When moving or transporting this fish, use a container instead of a net to avoid injury.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
