Pervagor spilosoma

Not Reef Safe

The Fantail Filefish (Pervagor spilosoma) is a vibrant and hardy species, well-regarded for its adaptability to aquarium life. Native to shallow Hawaiian reefs and rarely found beyond Johnston Atoll, this filefish can reach up to 7 inches in length and is best known for its ease of acclimation and bold appearance.

While generally peaceful, the Fantail Filefish may nip at long-finned tankmates and should not be housed with invertebrates. It does, however, tolerate stinging anemones such as Stichodactyla spp. Best kept singly unless a confirmed male-female pair is available, it may become aggressive toward others of its genus.

This species thrives in tanks of 55 gallons or more with a rockwork-rich environment. Feed a varied carnivorous diet including shrimp, squid, scallops, Mysid shrimp, vitamin-enriched freeze-dried krill, and frozen algae blends for omnivores or herbivores. Frequent feeding—at least three times daily—is recommended to maintain its health and color.

Resilient and full of character, the Fantail Filefish makes a unique and eye-catching addition for experienced aquarists seeking something different from traditional reef-safe species.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
