Bodianus anthioides
Not Reef Safe
The Lyretail Hogfish is a bold and colorful addition to fish-only marine systems, recognized for its reddish-orange face, pale pink body, and distinctive lyre-shaped tail. Energetic and curious, it often sifts through the sand by blowing water to uncover hidden prey, adding both movement and personality to the tank. Juveniles may act as cleaners, picking off parasites from other fish, but adults become active predators, feeding on meaty items like worms, mollusks, and small fish. This species thrives in tanks of 80 gallons or more with plenty of rockwork and open swimming space. While hardy and easy to feed, the Lyretail Hogfish has a moderately aggressive temperament and does best with similarly tempered tankmates, too passive or similarly shaped fish may be harassed. It is not reef-safe due to its appetite for invertebrates, making it best suited for FOWLR setups. With proper care and tank planning, this hogfish becomes a vibrant and entertaining focal point in larger marine aquariums.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
