Chaetodon mitratus
Not Reef Safe
The Mitratus Butterflyfish is a beautiful and uncommon species admired for its golden-yellow coloration, bold diagonal black bands, and contrasting orange facial markings. Native to deeper reef environments of the Indian Ocean, this elegant butterflyfish is generally peaceful and makes an attractive addition to a spacious fish-only marine aquarium. A well-established system of at least 120 gallons with ample swimming room, live rock, and sheltered areas will provide an ideal environment for this species to thrive. Although typically compatible with other peaceful fish, it is not recommended for reef aquariums due to its tendency to feed on small invertebrates and other reef organisms. A varied carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped crustaceans, and other high-quality marine foods will help maintain its health and vibrant appearance. With its distinctive pattern and graceful swimming behavior, the Mitratus Butterflyfish is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a unique addition to their saltwater collection.
