Elacatinus oceanops
Reef Safe
The Neon Blue Cleaner Goby (Elacatinus oceanops) is a small but essential addition to reef aquariums, beloved for both its vibrant coloration and its natural cleaning behavior. With neon blue, black, and white stripes running along its sleek 2-inch body, this goby brings both beauty and utility to saltwater tanks.
Native to the Western Central Atlantic, including Florida and the Caribbean, this species is commonly found nestled among coral heads. In both the wild and captivity, it acts as a cleaner fish, removing parasites and debris from the bodies of larger tank mates—often going unharmed by predators due to this mutually beneficial role. Public aquariums frequently use aquacultured Neon Gobies like those from ORA for natural disease control.
These gobies are hardy and well-suited for nano or larger reef aquariums. They readily accept frozen and dry prepared foods, though their natural diet consists primarily of parasites. Due to territorial tendencies, it's best to keep only one per tank unless you have a bonded pair and ample space.
Breeding is achievable in captivity, with mated pairs laying up to 800 eggs every 10 days, and larvae spending nearly a month in the planktonic stage before metamorphosis. With proper care, the Neon Blue Cleaner Goby is both a practical and eye-catching choice for any reef enthusiast.
These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
