Reef Safe With Caution

The Pygmy Red Rooster Waspfish (Paracentropogon zonatus), also known as the Bandtail Waspfish, is a rare and striking member of the scorpionfish family, native to the tropical waters of Indonesia. With its vivid red and white mottled coloration and compact size, this venomous species is a highly sought-after addition for experienced aquarists. Growing up to 3 inches in length, it thrives in aquariums of at least 30 gallons, where it can perch among rock structures and ambush prey.

Despite its modest size, this waspfish is a predator and will consume any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in its mouth. While generally leaving corals untouched, its appetite for small tankmates makes it only conditionally reef safe. It's best housed with larger, non-aggressive companions or as a mated pair in a species-only setup.

Due to their venomous spines and specific dietary needs, Pygmy Red Rooster Waspfish require advanced care. A diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp and small fish, offered through target feeding, is essential to keep them healthy. Their unique hunting behavior and bold appearance make them a fascinating display species for seasoned marine aquarists.

These fish are for saltwater aquariums only.
