Amphiprion percula
Reef Safe
The True Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) is a timeless favorite among marine aquarists, celebrated for its vibrant orange body and bold white stripes bordered by thick black margins. Often mistaken for its close relative, the Ocellaris Clownfish, the True Percula can be distinguished by its heavier black banding and a different number of spiny rays in its dorsal fin. As these fish mature, many develop deep, velvety black coloration between the stripes, enhancing their classic appearance. Native to distinct regions separate from Ocellaris, True Perculas are peaceful and adaptable, making them a perfect fit for beginner and experienced hobbyists alike. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single or pair, though a larger aquarium is ideal to help reduce territorial behavior and promote long-term stability. These fish thrive in reef environments with ample live rock for hiding spots and territory boundaries. While they don’t require anemones, they may host Bubble Tip Anemones if present, offering a delightful natural behavior to observe. The True Percula Clownfish does well with sand or fine gravel substrate and benefits from a balanced environment that mirrors its natural habitat. Hardy and peaceful, this iconic species is both beautiful and rewarding to keep.
